Age Friendly Chatham-Kent

Age Friendly Chatham-Kent

Building an inclusive, accessible, and respectful community for all ages.

Chatham-Kent residents, like the rest of Ontario’s, are getting older. As a share of the population, the senior demographic will nearly double over the next 20 years, rising to 31%. Those over 65 will soon be nearly one-in-three people! In 1950, people over 65 were about 6%, barely one-in-twenty.

Like age, these statistics are only numbers; numbers that evoke reactions within the reader based only on their frame of mind. Don’t interpret them as a dire crisis. Aging is not a problem! The opportunity to live a long life is a gift that was rare in generations past.

How an aging community and our own opportunity to live longer, fuller lives eventually impact us, depends on how we respond to this demographic change.
